Conditions at Canarsie Park basketball court continue to suffer

According to Ramel Young, who runs the Canarsie Flossy Basketball League, every time the sprinkler at Canarsie Park is turned on, the basketball court floods. Young says the issue has been happening since at least 2018, even though he has called 311 and written emails to the Parks Department and his local Congress people. In 2022, it looked like it paid off. He told News 12 that the New York City Council was able to get $1 million set aside to dig up the court and fix an old pipe.

Visitors to Prospect Park's iconic boathouse now have another excuse to hang out and enjoy the view of the lake as the brand-new Purslane Cafe opened on July Fourth. Early reviews from neighbors welcomed the new addition, with Will Hart from Prospect Heights saying, "it's nice to be able to participate in this kind of area...and we're all very jealous." Open seven days a week, the menu features coffee, sandwiches and pastries, along with beer and wine.
MTA continues reopening bathrooms in subway stations

After shutting down the bathrooms at all of its subway stations during the COVID-19 pandemic, the MTA started reopening them at few at a time in January 2023. Right now, the MTA tells News 12 there are 122 subway stations with open bathrooms around the city, with 21 of them in Brooklyn. That includes some of the busier stations, like Broadway Junction, Barclays Center and Coney Island. Some riders told News 12 they were a little hesitant to use a bathroom in a subway station.
Fallen tree on tracks in Ditmas Park causes massive subway issues

Wednesday night's wind and rain caused major subway issues for commuters in Brooklyn after a tree fell across three subway tracks near the Beverley Road station in Ditmas Park around 6:30 a.m. Thursday. "This year, we've had approximately 17 tree branches fall in such a way that we've had service delays in Brooklyn," said Lisa Schreibman, the MTA's acting senior vice president of subways.
City Council, Department of Buildings look to reduce number of sidewalk sheds

According to the New York City Council, there are 386 miles of sidewalk sheds up around the five boroughs right now, many of which have been up for years. Mayor Eric Adams has said that getting rid of unnecessary sheds is one of his top priorities, and Tuesday, members of the City Council held a hearing with the Department of Buildings to discuss how.
Police: Man stabbed outside of migrant shelter in Clinton Hill

A man was stabbed twice in the chest outside of a Clinton Hill migrant shelter, according to police. They say the victim is in critical, but stable condition. The NYPD says that the incident took place just after 12 p.m. They currently have one man in police custody. They say the stabbing took place as a result of a verbal dispute between the 20-year-old male victim and the suspect. The stabbing took place at the intersection of Hall Street and Flushing Avenue, outside of a migrant shelter.
Flatbush tenants say landlord has neglected multiple issues in Clarendon Road building

Tenants of 2802 Clarendon Road in Flatbush say their building has been suffering from years of neglect – a trend that started before COVID-19 when the management company J. Wasser took over. Samuel Francois, who lives on the third floor, told News 12 that he deals with issues including mold, holes and the ceiling collapsing – things he says are "literal safety issues that we could actually die from." Then on March 31, there was a fire in the building.

Jabari Brisport says he hopes the housing will help address what he calls "a severe housing crisis that's hitting Black Brooklyn especially hard, with so many community members having to leave because they can't afford to live here."Technically classified as "low to moderate income housing," Mosaic will be open to families making between 66% and 90% of the area's median income.
