If you ask anyone at Rao’s where you should eat, they will undoubtedly direct you to Patsy’s. Another cash-only relic of East Harlem’s Italian past, the 1933 thin-crust, coal oven pizzeria is our top dinner choice for when Rao’s does not offer you dinner. Patsy’s is also refreshingly low-key, with casual dates and a couple of pizza pilgrims dining under Frank Sinatra's portrait's watchful gaze.

You might head to Rockefeller Center only once a year to glance at a very tall tree that was sacrificed to wear an outfit of colored lights. This brasserie from the Frenchette team is another reason to go there. You’ll see plenty of raw bar items on the menu, in addition to classics like buttery and garlicky escargots. But the meat dishes are priority number one. The bison au poivre is ridiculously tender.

We probably don’t need to tell you much about Katz’s Deli. Even if you haven’t actually eaten at this famous Jewish establishment on the Lower East Side, you’ve almost surely heard of it. (Maybe you’ve even lied about the fact that you’ve been here.) Thanks to Meg Ryan and her exemplary orgasm in When Harry Met Sally, even people in Arkansas want to go to Katz’s to have what she’s having.

Abu’s Bean Pie Company in Bed-Stuy has been perfecting its bean pie recipe for over 20 years, and it shows. For the uninitiated, bean pies are usually made from navy beans, and are said to be the only Muslim American food in existence. They’re also delicious—four inches of custardy bottoms and golden brown top layers that are the texture of sweet, edible sand—and hard to find in the city, except at Abu’s. At Dolly’s, always plan for breakfast and breakfast dessert.

There are few eavesdropping treats as juicy as the thick-accented Delco men outside my window explaining the plot of House of the Dragon: "So wut we're seeyan now is how thehhr entire kingdum fell." Ily philly.
