3 1/1 AN Ouse cruise with fish and chips is a fun way to see York, writes HELEN MEAD. What better way to get a taste of the historic city of York than on a boat - with a tray of tasty fish and chips to enjoy as you sail, and it’s even better if the sun is shining. I always strive to get a window seat when eating out. It’s always a bonus if the view includes a historic landmark or two.

Using a phone during dinner is rude WHEN I was growing up our family phone - one of those old-fashioned landlines that barely anyone uses today - stood on the windowsill. It was within reaching distance of my dad’s carver chair which sat at the dining table, so if it rang during mealtimes, he would grumble, before reluctantly picking it up. The call was usually friends calling for one of us kids, meaning we would have to get up and take it.
