    The City of Sioux Falls wrote 20 tickets to drivers who parked too-long trucks on four blocks of Phillips Avenue in the first two weeks under a new ordinance. The vehicle length restrictions – designated by a white line behind the diagonal parking spots – went into effect on May 1. Twenty total tickets were written as of Wednesday, according to the public parking division. That number seems about right, according to Matt Nelson, public parking manager for the city.

    It turns out that lots of South Dakota communities want to be the site of the next state penitentiary. And a few of them have a pretty good pitch. Mitchell, Aberdeen and Huron were among the dozen new sites forwarded since Gov. Larry Rhoden “reset” the discussion following months of acrimonious debate over plans for a new 1,500 bed prison just south of Sioux Falls, the price tag for which is creeping ever closer to $1 billion. There were eight more proposals for spots in the metro as well.

    Outside of Falls Park, the Cathedral and the downtown skyline, some of the most recognizable features in Sioux Falls are the viaducts that cross the Big Sioux River, connecting east and west in downtown. But after decades of use, the state of South Dakota says the end is near for both bridges. Up first is the 10th Street viaduct, followed by its newer sibling on 11th Street.

    An international student in western South Dakota overcame Kristi Noem’s attempt to stop her from graduating Saturday, while hundreds of people protested on the other side of the state where Noem received an honorary degree and delivered a commencement speech. The international student is Priya Saxena, from India. She received two degrees from South Dakota Mines in Rapid City: a doctorate in chemical and biological engineering and a master’s degree in chemical engineering.
