KITTERY, Maine — Despite being approved for hire, nearly 150 new workers at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard have yet to begin their employment due to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management holding up their processing, according to New Hampshire and Maine U.S. senators. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Angus King, I-Maine, and Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH, are urging the Office of Personnel Management to expedite the yard workers’ hiring.

PORTSMOUTH — Public safety personnel responded to the Piscataqua River Bridge Sunday night to help find a person who jumped from the high-level Interstate 95 span, according to city Fire Chief Bill McQuillen. Fire and medical crews from Portsmouth were dispatched shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday. Responders searched the river until 11:30 p.m. before the search was paused for the evening, then crews picked up the search again Monday morning prior to 7 a.m., according to McQuillen.

KITTERY, Maine — Eric Waddell, superintendent of schools in Kittery, will step down from his post in June to become the executive director of the Maine School Management Association. Superintendent since July 2017, Waddell came to Kittery five years prior to become the principal of R.W. Traip Academy, the town’s public high school.
