Over the holidays, we received good news that the Oregon Department of Transportation will receive $33 million in federal funding to construct a wildlife bridge across Interstate 5, two miles north of the California-Oregon border. This funding is available through the Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program, a part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act signed into law in 2021. Groundbreaking likely will occur in 2027.

Home sales in Houston had another off month in June as the local market continues to try to find its way amid high mortgage interest rates and stubborn prices. The Houston Association of Realtors reports sales were down 11.6% in June compared to June 2023. It's the second straight month of lower sales in Houston. Housing inventory also played a bigger part in last month's numbers. The number of homes available rose to 4.3 months of supply in June, up from around 3 months’ supply a year ago.

Around 34,000 remote reading devices have been installed at residential homes since April and another 125,000 could be installed before the end of the year. They allow Public Works to determine usage remotely instead of needing employees to read each water meter.

Mother Nature likely played a role as Houston home sales declined in May after a fast start in the early part of the year. The Houston Association of Realtors reports sales were down 1.5% last month compared to May of 2023. Widespread power outages led to some closings being delayed. High mortgage rates and uncertainty about the economy also continued to keep some potential buyers on the sidelines. You can also add higher home prices to that equation.
