Thirty-seven students from Westfield High School’s Youth and Government (YAG) Club participated in the 81st Annual New Jersey Youth and Government Conference, held April 25-27 at the Hilton East Brunswick. The three-day event welcomed 400 students from more than 20 high schools across the state, offering a hands-on opportunity to experience the legislative, executive, and judicial functions of state government.

Fifth grade students at The Wardlaw+Hartridge School in Edison performed two classic Greek stories as classroom plays for their biggest fans, their Kindergarten buddies! The featured stories were The Trojan War, written and performed by 5C, and Perseus and the Gorgon, written and performed by 5S. The students worked hard for several weeks to adapt their stories into scripts, create props and costumes, and rehearse and prepare to stage their performances.

WESTFIELD, NJ — A busy corner in the central business district is due for an injection of new life after the planning board approved proposed changes for 201 Central Ave. at its meeting on Monday, May 5. The building, which sits at the corner of Lenox and Central Avenues, will retain its current foundation, but will be new otherwise, according to presentations made to the board by Richard Schkolnick, an attorney representing the developers of the property.

Boys Lacrosse: Westfield Rallies to End Summit’s County Streak

CLARK, NJ — The second-seeded Westfield High School boys lacrosse team took home the Union County Tournament championship Saturday evening, defeating top-seeded Summit, 6-5, at Johnson High School. The Blue Devils rallied from a 3-0 deficit and put an end to Summit’s streak of six straight county crowns. In what seems to be an annual meeting between the two foes in the county final, Westfield won its first title since the 2017 season.
Firefighters Rescue 7-Year-Old Who Climbed Tree

WESTFIELD, NJ — Firefighters in one Union County town took their jobs to new heights recently when they rescued a 7-year-old boy with autism from high in a tree. At about 7 p.m. on April 30, the Westfield Fire Department received a phone call direct to their firehouse about the boy, who had climbed 40 to 50 feet up the tree, the department wrote on its Facebook page. Members of the department used an aerial ladder to rescue the child, the post said.

CLARK, NJ — This week, Raiders coach Nick Miceli told TAPinto that in order to beat Westfield, one of the area's elite lacrosse programs, in the Union County tournament semifinal, Scotch Plains-Fanwood needed to play a full 48 minutes at their peak performance. Unfortunately for the Raiders, their opponents jumped out to a 3-0 in the first quarter and looked like they might win in a blowout at A.L. Johnson High School field in Clark on Thursday evening.
