Ready for winter? Parts of the North Country to get 4-5 feet of snow

Winter arrives in a big way this weekend, with several feet of lake effect snow expected to fall across parts of the North Country. Lake Effect Snow Warnings are in effect for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties until 7 p.m. Monday. A band of intense lake effect snow has set up east of Lake Ontario as of Friday morning, with moderate to heavy snow falling from northern Oswego County to just north of the city of Watertown.

Syracuse University has suspended a campus fraternity, after videos posted online showed students being hazed and abused. In a letter to the campus Wednesday, Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud said the "repugnant" videos "put the well-being of some of our students in jeopardy." He said the videos were taken at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house. "I am disgusted by the actions that appear in these videos and condemn this conduct," Syverud said in the letter.

Oswego County sheriff's deputy killed in car crash while responding to call

An Oswego County sheriff’s deputy was killed in the line of duty Wednesday morning, after crashing her patrol car while responding to a call. According to the sheriff’s department, 33-year-old Deputy Cailee Campbell was responding to a call at around 6:40 a.m., when she entered the intersection of County Route 176 and Rowlee Road in the Town of Volney when Campbell’s patrol car was hit by another vehicle.

The New York State Fair closed early Sunday night, after reports of gunfire that turned out to be false, State police said. In a statement, State Police say a call was made to 911 at 8:38 p.m. from someone who reported hearing gunshots between the Midway and Suburban Park stage, where rapper Rick Ross was performing. Another call was made at 8:41 p.m. reporting gunshots near The Eatery. Police rushed to both areas but found no evidence of any gunshots or injuries.

Biden nominates former CNY congressman for federal judge post

President Joe Biden has nominated former central New York Rep. Anthony Brindisi to serve as a U.S. District Court judge for the Northern District of New York, the White House announced Wednesday. Brindisi has served as a judge on the New York Court of Claims in Utica since 2022, and has also served as an acting state Supreme Court justice in Oneida County since the start of this year.
