School Bus Stop Arms vs. Red Light Cameras; What's the Difference

The State of Minnesota allows for cameras on school buses to catch those committing stop arm violations but red light cameras continue to be prohibited. Stearns County Attorney Janelle Kendall joined me on WJON. She says bus drivers can't be expected to clearly identify the license plate and make and model of the vehicle running the stop arm due to other responsibilities which involves the safety of the children onboard. Due to that Kendall says the cameras can offer evidence of the violation.
Sabres Girls Golfers Look to Defend Their Conference Title

The Sartell-St. Stephen girls golf team has a goal of defending their Central Lakes Conference title this season. Last year marked the first year Sartell won a girls golf conference championship. Sabres head coach Brad Scherer joined me on WJON. He says they got their first chance to practice at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course Tuesday and look forward to their first meet Thursday.
Distracted Driving Is Still a Danger in MN

Fire Extinguishers Dumped in Benton County; Theft in Waite Park

Waite Park Police are reporting theft from a storage unit on 7th Street South. Alicia Mages from Tri-County Crime Stoppers says a Television was taken. The Benton County Sheriff's Office are reporting fire extinguishers been dumped at Bent in the River Park.
These Used to be Hot Spots in Downton St. Cloud

WJON is taking a look at former St. Cloud movie theaters. I am joined by Steve Penick and John Decker from the Stearns History Museum. The Eastman Theater was located at 21 2nd street south in St. Cloud. It opened in 1940, had seating of 464, it closed in 1967 and was since demolished. Penick and Decker say the Eastman Theater did just movies in their 27 years of operation. The Eastman Theater was operated by Minnesota Amusement Company. The Eastman Theater is pictured above.
Former Herberger's Building Could Be Changing Hands

The Herberger's building has been mostly sitting empty since the department store closed in August of 2018. St. Cloud Mayor Jake Anderson joined me on WJON. He indicated there is a purchase agreement in place with a closing expected in late May or early June. Anderson doesn't know anymore about who the buyer is and what they intend to do with the property. He says the property is zoned commercial, it could be retail, office space or sub divided.
SCSU Hoping for State Money to Demo These Unused Buildings

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system has requested $25 Million from the State Legislature for one time uses. St. Cloud State is pursuing a portion of that money to demo some unused buildings on campus. SCSU Interim President Larry Dietz joined me on WJON. He says they are hoping to receive enough money to take town 1 to 2 buildings. Dietz explains the cost to remove a building is approximately $3-4 Million with the bulk of the expense coming from asbestos abatement.
SCSU's Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Needs State Help

St. Cloud State University has requested one time dollars from the Minnesota State Legislature for a new chiller at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. SCSU Interim President Larry Dietz says the chiller in the arena has out used its usefulness by about 20 years. He says parts aren't even made for the chiller currently in operation at SCSU. Dietz says if you don't have a chiller, you don't have a hockey rink. He says SCSU has been lobbying for this for quite some time.
MN Open Water Fishing Strategies in April

Ice is out in Central Minnesota and places south in the state. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says once lake accesses become available open water fishing can be had for crappies and panfish in Central Minnesota in lakes and rivers. He says water temperatures are still cool. Schmitt believes crappies and panfish can be found in shallow water, in bays and possibly suspended over basins.
