Jon Keith Miller ’s confession to the 1974 murder of 25-year-old Mary Schlais can be heard on The Vault podcast’s current season, “Joli Truelson: Connecting the Dots.”Faced with one count of first-degree murder, Miller, 84, pleaded no contest March 27 in a Dunn County, Wis. courtroom. He was sentenced to life in prison. Miller has been questioned by the Minneapolis Police Department in connection to the 1972 slaying of 16-year-old Joli Truelson.

DUNN COUNTY, Wisc — Jon Keith Miller, 84, pleaded no contest Thursday, March 27 to the 1974 murder of 25-year-old Mary Schlais . He was sentenced to life in prison. Miller was arrested on Nov. 7, 2024, at an Owatonna, Minn., living facility — more than 50 years after Mary Schlais' death — on a charge of first-degree murder.

In a 10-page hand-delivered letter to the MPD, the family cites numerous similarities in the deaths of Truelson and Schlais, which occurred less than two years — and 2 miles — apart.

ANOKA COUNTY, Minn. –- The case started with a missing vehicle. Edwin Hawes’ roommate noticed his Volkswagen Passat was missing from the driveway on Oct. 30, 2008. In its place sat a pool of blood. Hawes hadn’t shown up to work that day, either. When law enforcement received the call, two Anoka County Sheriff’s deputies immediately recognized Edwin Hawes’ name.
