MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A car crashed into an East Memphis home and caught fire in the yard after police say the driver drove off during an attempted traffic stop. Just before 4 a.m., officers say they were called to a crash at a home in the 1500 block of Ellsworth Street. A man who lives at the home told police he was asleep when he heard a loud noise in front of his house.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — The man accused of stalking Memphis Mayor Paul Young at his home faced a judge Friday. Trenton Abston, 25, is being held on a $50,000 bond. He is charged with attempted kidnapping, stalking, and aggravated criminal trespass. Young said he saw the man on his Ring doorbell camera and did not answer the door. Judge Taylor Bachelor told Abston that he is facing two misdemeanor charges for stalking and trespassing, and a felony charge of attempted kidnapping.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman was taken to a hospital Thursday morning after a large tree fell on a house in the University area of East Memphis. The tree came down on the house in the 500 block of Shotwell near Southern Avenue around 6 a.m., as strong storms passed through the area late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. “I know the lightning woke me up and I heard a big ‘boom,’ and then the power flickered on and shut off, and I heard a scream,” said resident Clara Mashburn.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man accused of taking his five-month-old daughter from her mother at gunpoint on Wednesday appeared in court Thursday morning. Robert Avant, 31, is charged with aggravated burglary, especially aggravated kidnapping, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. He is currently held in jail on a $100,000 bond. While in court, Avant stood saying very little and instead shook his head side-to-side as if he were disagreeing with the charges.
