Trent North remembers being the only Black eighth grade teacher at Carrollton Middle School in the 1990s. Now that he thinks about it, he may have been the only Black teacher in the entire school. North recalled his solo status ended when Calvin Watts showed up about three years later. North taught history, focusing on Georgia studies and government. Watts taught and coached the girls soccer team.

A $1 million federal grant is headed to Georgia Piedmont Technical College — one that will help military veterans hop into a growing career path. The U.S. National Science Foundation’s Experiential Learning for Emerging and Novel Technologies awarded the college the Mechatronics Immersive Learning Experience (MILE) grant, to introduce veterans to the mechatronics industry. It’s a grant the college’s president, Tavarez Holston, said gives veterans a new path after serving in the military.

While many students are in summer programs or camps, several thousand young people participated in a unique activity — honing in on trade skills, professions that industry leaders say is dying. As a part of SkillsUSA, a workforce development organization, students across the country participated in a recent three-day competition at the Georgia World Congress Center, working on their trade skills, possibly creating a path to scholarships or job offers.
