Crude oil prices soared to a record $35 a barrel in April 1980—equivalent to $134 today—and towns like Oil City in North Caddo Parish, home to the Caddo Pine Island Oil Field, thrived on the prosperity. But within a few short years, that boom turned into one of the most devastating busts in Louisiana economic history, forever altering the region’s landscape and economy.
