Fire Department Joins in Water Day at Last Day of School

On Tuesday and Wednesday last week, our Tombstone Volunteer Fire Department showed off the results of their constant training. First at Walter J. Meyer School. On a very hot next-to-last day of school, hundreds of happy screaming students laughed as they dunked their teachers into a big tank brought over by Councilmember Colin Regan. One by one, Hannah Skinner, Maribel Gonzalez, and Desi Luna dropped into the delightfully cool water.
Over Sixty Members and Guests Meet for International Mixer in Tombstone

Gunshots rang out in Wyatt’s Oriental Saloon last Friday evening, as 65 members and guests of the Southern Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce met for a special Regional/International mixer in Tombstone. Attendees came not only from Tombstone and Sierra Vista, but from Tucson, Benson, Douglas, Graham County as well as Sonora, Mexico.

We’ve got a real treat coming this Saturday, according to Bonnie Darlington of the Vigilettes. “It’s our Annual Bake Sale,” she says, “And you’ll find more than a dozen lovely ladies in our 1880s attire out on the boardwalk selling freshly-baked cake, cupcakes, cookies, and brownies.” Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM, along Allen Street and also at the Tombstone Chamber of Commerce next to the Visitors Center on 4th Street.
Tombstone Restoration Commission Announces Plans for 2025

Last Monday night, the Tombstone Restoration Commission held its annual meeting at their building near 6th and Toughnut. President Bob Ramirez presented the TRC’s 2024 report marking several substantial achievements. Major repair work on Schieffelin Hall is completed, with thanks to Linda Krater of the Walter Ferguson Foundation and their $500,000 restoration grant.

Tombstonian Heather Rose, Vicar at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for five years, has accepted a new position as Rector of the Episcopal Church of Lincoln County, Diocese of the Rio Grande. She will oversee three parishes -- Church of the Holy Mount, Ruidoso, St. Anne’s Church, Glencoe, and St. Matthias Church, Carrizozo... as well as preaching at the 100-member Church of the Holy Mount in Ruidoso.
City to Celebrate Fountain Installation Saturday!

Save the date! You’re invited to a special Sister City Fountain Celebration, in Tombstone’s Schieffelin Park at 3rd and Allen at 10 AM on Saturday, August 24th. The ceremony will mark the installation of a beautiful fountain, given to the City of Tombstone by the City of Heroica Cananea. it was installed this week by Matthew King and Foreman Jesse Grassman from Public Works, and tested with mountain pure Tombstone water straight from Carr Canyon high in the Huachuca’s.

If you are out and about on 5th Street near Allen on Wednesday August 21st, don’t be surprised if the air shimmers and suddenly it’s 1879 as you walk by Tombstone’s original tent saloon, crowded with miners washing down their Golden Eagle beer with shots of Old Overholt whiskey. The air shimmers, and you’re back just in time for Mario Gandolfo’s Paranormal Lockdown Documentary, in a re-created tent saloon set with more than 20 actors and investigators, like locals Paul Fry and Ernest Pence.
Public Works Carpenter Hard at Work on City Boardwalk

Summer heat, over 100° at noon outside the Tombstone Visitor Center. A hot day on the Allen St. boardwalk, with Public Works carpenter Lane Wilkins replacing old boards with new pieces. All Douglas Fir, but different sizes -- ranging from 5 1/2 feet to 11’9” -- because all our boardwalks are not the same. Lane cuts each piece to the correct length on the spot. With the old boards removed, he carefully replaces damaged 2”x 4” runners with stronger 2”x 6” supports.
Schieffelin Park Gazebo Getting a Makeover

On a hot and humid afternoon, Rebecca Larsen from City Public Works carefully climbed up into the sun, high up on scaffolding on the beautiful old gazebo in Schieffelin Park. Swinging a heavy pry bar, she attacked the rotten cedar shake roof shingles. Took awhile, but then the job was done, revealing the underlying wood roof that was in very good condition. There’s local history here.
