Vietnam veterans to mark anniversary of war's end

For the seventh time, Nacogdoches County’s Vietnam veterans will be officially welcomed home and recognized for their service during the war in which major American involvement ended 52 years ago this month. Piney Woods Chapter 931 of Vietnam Veterans of America began its annual Vietnam Veterans Day program in 2017, but the event was sidelined for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shaking hands with George Foreman showed me a gentle champ of kindness

Somewhere in a box in my still unpacked office is a slip of paper with George Foreman’s cellphone number on it. Journalists never discard any living person’s phone number on purpose. I carried soul legend Percy Sledge’s home phone number in my wallet until the day he died, but I never called him beyond our initial interview sometime around 20 years ago. I remember taking the worn strip of paper from my pocket and casually discarding it in a trash can.
George Foreman archive keeps legacy alive at East Texas Research Center

George Foreman, the two-time world heavyweight boxing champion, died Friday, but his legacy as a world class boxer, businessman and humanitarian lives on through an archive of personal papers at Stephen F. Austin State University. Foreman, 76, died at a Houston area hospital. In 2011, he donated many of his personal papers, photographs and a collection of sermons to the East Texas Research Center.
New hats are a major league blunder

My dad bought a baseball cap for me at my first Rangers’ game. The hat was a solid dark blue with a simple capital T and top button done in red. No frills. Nothing fancy. It was the kind of hat any dad would buy his son. I wore it until the snapping band in the back broke to pieces. I would take it to school, even though hats weren’t allowed in the classroom, and I wore it to play outside every day. Those were different times. I hesitate to call them simpler times.
Goodbye Colonial Hills; Sentinel moves after decades

Saying goodbye is never easy, even when the farewell is to a building. By the time our readers see this column, The Daily Sentinel will have moved from its home of nearly five decades on Colonial Drive to a new, better-sized spot at 3500 North St, Suite 4. Moving is the right choice, but I’ll miss this place at 4920 Colonial Drive. I’ve got lots of stories about it. From within the walls of this building, I’ve shared joy and sadness with our readers and sources.
Nac Short Film Festival is Saturday

Moviegoers will have a chance to see more than a dozen films for free Saturday as the Nac Short Film Festival returns for its third year. The festival is set for 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday in the movie theater inside the Baker Pattillo Student Center, 222 Vista Drive, on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. “We’re going to have 15 films altogether. We’re going to have films from all over the country and around the world,” said Herbert Midgley, the festival’s organizer.
Voters to decide on tax increase to fund fire services

Voters in northwestern Nacogdoches County will decide in May whether to increase property taxes by 7 cents to help offset a projected increase in the cost of operating three volunteer fire departments. The board of Nacogdoches County Emergency Services District No. 2 unanimously voted Feb. 11 to call the election that seeks to increase the tax rate from 3 cents per $100 in valuation to 10 cents.
Candidate field is set for May city, school elections

The slate of candidates is here. The City of Nacogdoches, and school districts in Nacogdoches, Garrison and Chireno will all have contested races on the ballot in May. Additionally, voters in the Cushing area will decide whether to increase taxes in Emergency Service District No. 2 in an effort to better fund three volunteer fire departments. The City of Nacogdoches will have its first contested mayoral race since 2019.
Nac ISD won’t let ICE on campus without warrant

Nacogdoches ISD this week emphasized that the district will prioritize student safety and not allow immigration agents on campuses without a warrant as President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration increase. “Let me reassure you of some important facts. Every child – every child – is welcome in Nacogdoches ISD. This isn’t just me saying this; it’s the law,” NISD Superintendent Dr. Gabe Trujillo said in a video and written statement posted online this week.

Like tormented animals, caged too long and broken of spirit, the room full of men stared — appearing almost dead behind their sunken eyes — at the man in the unfamiliar military uniform. Any uniformed man to show up in the filthy barracks caused immeasurable terror. But this man was different.
