Editor’s note: This column is adapted from an address delivered in honor of San Jacinto Day to Daughters of the Republic of Texas on Monday at Oak Grove Cemetery. One hundred and eighty-nine years ago Monday, the Texian Army routed Mexican Gen. Santa Anna’s forces during an 18 minute battle at San Jacinto, bringing an end to approximately six months of fighting. Texas was finally free of Mexican rule, but for most East Texans the war wasn’t over. At least they didn’t know it was over.

For the seventh time, Nacogdoches County’s Vietnam veterans will be officially welcomed home and recognized for their service during the war in which major American involvement ended 52 years ago this month. Piney Woods Chapter 931 of Vietnam Veterans of America began its annual Vietnam Veterans Day program in 2017, but the event was sidelined for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic.
