BELOIT, Ohio (WKBN) – Walt DeShields could return as head coach of the West Branch girls basketball team after the district said it would not renew DeShields’ contract due to “concerning behavior.”According to the agenda for Wednesday’s school board meeting, DeShields is set to be recommended for a supplemental contract.

CRAIG BEACH, Ohio (WKBN) — Craig Beach signed a contract with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday to provide protection to the village after the entire Craig Beach Police Department resigned last week. The Sheriff’s Office has already been handling many of the village’s calls. Now, those calls will go directly to dispatch, something officials say may improve response times.

NEWTON TWP, Ohio (WKBN) — A quick-thinking mom helped keep a house fire from worsening in Newton Township. It happened just after 4 p.m. on South Canal Street. Newton Falls Fire Chief James Williamson says a child was playing with a torch lighter in a bedroom closet when the fire started. The mom was able to close the bedroom door, keeping the flames from spreading. Williamson says the damage is estimated at $25,000. No one was hurt. Nadine Grimley contributed to this report.
