Police in Spokane Valley fatally shot a man who authorities said had killed a good Samaritan in Kootenai County during a carjacking spree early Sunday. The spree began around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, according to police, when a suspect who has not been publicly identified stole a vehicle from a father and daughter in Spokane Valley and then fled east toward Idaho. Deputies pursued the suspect, who reportedly reached speeds of up to 140 mph, and lost sight of him before he crossed into Kootenai County.

COEUR d’ALENE — While protests over federal immigration enforcement actions continue nationwide, more cities are expected to see demonstrations later this week, including several in North Idaho. “No Kings” protests are planned across the country Saturday, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s planned military parade in Washington, D.C., as well as Trump’s 79th birthday. The Coeur d’Alene protest is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 95 and Appleway Avenue.

COEUR d’ALENE — From the time that he was a child, Thomas Chaffin has always had a love for muscle cars. It was a passion that his father, Keven Chaffin, encouraged. The father-son duo enjoyed attending car shows together, especially Car d’Lane. When Chaffin was about 14 years old, they began working on their own project: a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro. It was an activity they could share while Chaffin’s dad battled cancer.

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office outlined a proposed budget for fiscal year 2026 in a Tuesday meeting with county commissioners. The agency’s proposed budget is $54 million, a figure that includes about $4.5 million in new funding requests. Kootenai County commissioners will weigh the requests as part of the budgeting process. The adopted budget for fiscal year 2025 included $48 million for the sheriff’s office.
