KOKOMO — Central Noble's softball team caught a big break going up against Rossville's Indiana All-Star pitcher Avery Layton in the fifth inning of the second semifinal of the Class 2A North Semi-State Saturday afternoon at the two-year-old Kokomo High School softball stadium. The Cougars fed off a dropped popup by the Hornets and turned it into a five-run inning to take a 5-1 lead on last season's Class 1A state champion.

CHURUBUSCO — Recent Churubusco High School graduate Grace Lawson signed to play volleyball at Lansing Community College on May 22. Lawson is coming off a big softball season for the Eagles. She had six home runs for a 17-win team this spring, and became the program's career leader in runs batted in. But Lawson chose volleyball, for now. But she did rule out coming back to softball in the future. "I like the sport better," Lawson said of volleyball.

ANGOLA — The Northeast Corner Conference boys golf tournament has had stars at the forefront recently. However, there has been room around the top of the league for teams with balance throughout the lineup without a star, like Angola and regular season co-champion Fremont, who made the coaches’ state rankings for a week in the middle of the season. Westview needed a solid player who was not the Haarer brothers to lift them to victory.
