Coming into today, the White Sox had lost the first three games of the series in Kansas City by a total of 9-4, never so far out of the games that the situation was hopeless. Well, until the end, anyway. And even this one was close until a series of events in the fifth inning.

It’s Davis Martin’s turn on the hill, trying to do as well as his predecessor starting pitchers did this week. Martin sports a 3.52 ERA, though he was touched for three runs in five innings by the Astros last time out.

Baseball-Reference keeps a statistic called Wins Above Average, or WAA, which is kind of bWAR, but with a higher-level requirement to get above zero. They keep WAA by position by team, which makes it particularly useful for a team like the White Sox, where there’s a high turnover of who’s playing where for most positions.

The White Sox did what you have to do against good pitchers and got to Hunter Brown big time in the first inning: Chase Meidroth led off with a solid single. Miguel Vargas crushed a 108.4 mph liner for another single.

But, of course, the Chicago White Sox showed why they have the very worst record in the league, by playing gracious guests and declining to accept the gift. Will that politesse continue this afternoon?

The 5-18 record is a pace to set another record with just 35 wins, but it is better than the 3-20 of a year ago, so there is a bright side. Bright-ish, anyway.

Eric Canha-Imagn Images Make it six losses in a row for the now 4-16 White Sox, despite solid performances from Edgar Quero, Chase Meidroth and (surprise, surprise) Luis Robert Jr. Some less-than-clutch hitting (1-for-10 with RISP, including 0-for-6 in the last two innings) turned a comeback from down 3-0 into just another chance to watch the other guys celebrate.

Sunday’s matchup between the former White Sox star and a rising one lived up to the expectation of a pitchers’ duel, as it went scoreless until Smith ran out of gas in the sixth. Crochet kept up his side with a no-hitter until a Chase Meidroth single in the eighth, and picked up a 3-1 win.
