She left to raise her family, but she missed the classroom. In 2001 she returned to teaching and took a position teaching special education at Lodi High School in 2014.

Peggy Maurer is the second Crystal Apple Award recipient of 2025, and received nine different nominations. Maurer teaches STEAM- which is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics- and she is a K-12 library media specialist. For 35 years, Maurer has been a pillar of the Poynette School District.
