Medical examiner rules Tacoma ICE detainee died of natural causes

Charles Leo Daniel died of natural causes while detained at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Tacoma, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner. The report released on Monday specified that Daniel died of hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Hypertension is high blood pressure, and ASCVD is caused by plaque buildup in arterial walls. Daniel, a 61-year-old immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago, was first found dead on March 7.

911 calls reveal at least 6 recent suicide attempts at ICE facility in Tacoma

If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing 9-8-8, or the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741. New 911 call records reveal that so far this year there’s been at least six suicide attempts by people detained at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma. The records, obtained by the University of Washington Center for Human Rights, include a description of a suicide attempt by a 28-year-old female.
Washington state dedicates more than $25 million to asylum seekers

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee is poised to sign off on a budget that includes more than $25 million for asylum seekers. Most of the funding will go to the state Office of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance for services that include housing and legal assistance, food, and transportation. Another $2.5 million is going directly to the city of Tukwila. Hundreds of asylum seekers have been staying at Riverton Park United Methodist Church, which is located there.

A man was found dead on March 7 while detained at the immigration detention center in Tacoma. On Friday, the University of Washington researchers released an analysis saying the man, 61-year-old Charles Leo Daniel from Trinidad and Tobago, was possibly held in solitary confinement for close to four years. That would be one of the longest stays in isolation at any immigration facility in the U.S. The United Nations regards solitary confinement of more than 15 consecutive days as a form of torture.

Florida-based private prison company GEO Group has been hit with another lawsuit by a Washington state agency.
