HALL COUNTY, Neb. (KSNB) - A fast-moving fire burned through about 60 acres near the Platte River in Hall County Wednesday evening, drawing help from multiple fire departments, local farmers and volunteers. Shelton Fire Chief Jon Heminger said they were called out to a fire near Denman Road and South Bluff Center Road around 5:30 p.m. Heminger said a man who had a burn permit a couple weeks ago ended up lighting another pile — this time without a permit.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A man convicted after a fire that destroyed two buildings in north Grand Island is going on probation. Heriberto Gonzalez Castillo, 25, was convicted of attempted possession of a controlled substance and first offense driving under the influence, both misdemeanors in February. A related charge of no operator’s license was dismissed. Court records show that Gonzalez Castillo was sentenced to 18 months probation on both counts to be served concurrently, or at the same time.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The suspect in the I-80 rest stop murder remains incompetent to stand trial, according Hall County District Court records. James Thompson Jr. had a competency review hearing on Friday, where the judge ruled that he still is not fit for trial and that he will remain in the Lincoln Regional Center for treatment. The 22-year-old is accused of stabbing a Missouri man to death at an I-80 rest stop near Grand Island.

(KSNB) - Project Hunger is asking for people’s help by taking part in the 29th annual Easter Basket Extravaganza, a silent auction that seeks to combat food insecurity in central Nebraska. “It is a fundraiser we use to raise money to feed central Nebraska,” Project Hunger President Doug Winder said. People in the community, businesses, local churches and nonprofits have donated items that will go up for auction.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A Grand Island man is facing a felony charge after he’s accused of getting his stepdaughter pregnant, according to police. Local4 is choosing not to name the suspect in the case to protect the identity of the victim. The 37-year-old man is charged with one count of felony first-degree sexual assault of a child in Hall County Court.
