Despite controversy over awarding Secretary Noem the honorary degree, Dakota State University President José-Marie Griffiths said Noem has supported and helped secure funding for the school’s cybersecurity programs.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem spoke at Dakota State University’s commencement speaker and received an honorary doctorate degree from the university. As she spoke inside the fieldhouse, groups of rally attendees and others were on Washington Avenue.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Suggest a summer in any given year since at least the 1980s and it’s likely Lake Mitchell will have had algae problems. The city will be moving ahead with a project to drain and clean the lake starting later this year. It’s a project that comes after years of discussion and closed swimming use. The surface area of the lake is 671 acres and the contributing watershed area is 350,960 acres.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A fatal crash occurred on East Rice Street around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning. A Jeep Cherokee, driven by an adult male, was traveling east on Rice Street when it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Chevy Malibu near the Veterans Parkway intersection, a news release from the Sioux Falls Police Department said. Two adult females were in the Chevy. The female passenger was pronounced dead on scene, despite life saving efforts. Video Player is loading.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A vehicle crashed into a day care along Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls on Wednesday morning. KELOLAND News spoke with Truks-N-Trykes 2 Daycare owner Jeremy Cotton, who said than no staff, children or parents were injured when a parent drove through the front of the building. “We had a parent that went through the front of our daycare center. Nobody was hurt — kids were luckily in their classrooms,” said Cotton.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A baby that was kidnapped by his foster parent was located safe in Detroit, MI. The fugitive task force began looking for Betty Cross, who is accused of kidnapping 7-month-old Chosen Butler. SFPD spokesman Sam Clemens said at Thursday’s police briefing that the Fugitive Task Force received information that Cross may have been in Detroit and notified the Michigan authorities.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The House rejected an attempt to reconsider the amended bill that would transfer millions into the state’s incarceration fund to build a new men’s prison. Republican Rep. Taylor Rehfeldt requested reconsideration after an amended version of House Bill 1025 failed Friday on a 34-35 vote. On Monday, the reconsideration vote failed 35-35. Rehfeldt said she had two primary reasons for asking that the amended HB 1025 be placed back on the House calendar.

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) –The fate of one of South Dakota’s largest proposed projects in state history took a big hit Friday in Pierre. The South Dakota House of Representatives has decided that it’s still too early for a final decision on whether a 1,500-bed men’s prison should be built in Lincoln County — and possibly too early for any new prison at all. After an hour-long debate, the amended version of House Bill 1025 failed by a 34-35 vote with one lawmaker excused.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Highway Patrol will be adding more staff to Sioux Falls. In a press conference held Friday afternoon, Republican Gov. Larry Rhoden announced 8 more troopers and one sergeant will be added to the highway patrol based in Sioux Falls. The governor says the new additions to the staff will be paid by state highway funds, along with $1 million in one-time funding for the proper new equipment. The SDHP increase still needs to go through the legislature.
