At a rate of 5.65 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, the violent crime rate was at its lowest point since 2019, according to city data. “To see these numbers trending down is representative of what we kind of know — while the city’s getting bigger, we are getting busier.     SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — On April 1 two women, Jill Janecke and Abby Martinez, were announced as the two local winners of Nexstar’s Remarkable Women initiative. Janecke, of Pierre, spent the last 12 years building up Rising Hope Counseling, a mental health clinic, and Martinez, out of Jones County, is an elementary teacher in Murdo. The two were most recently a part of a large group of women who made their way to Los Angeles for the national Remarkable Women conference.

    SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Earth Day, held every year on April 22, was created 55 years ago in 1970. The official Earth Day site calls the founding of Earth Day, “the birth of the modern environmental movement.”Here in Sioux Falls, students at O’Gorman joined an estimated 20 million in the U.S. to help clean up their communities. Here in South Dakota, it was cold and snowy, but that didn’t stop them from their task. “Well there’s a lot of trash being dumped around the park,” said one student said.
