SIOUX CITY -- A historic painted Hamm's Beer advertisement has emerged from hiding on the wall of a west side bar. The east-facing exterior wall of the Red Room Lounge, 1000 West Seventh St., was for many years covered in deteriorating red and white siding.
Multiple agencies respond to massive fire in South Sioux City

SOUTH SIOUX CITY — Multiple emergency response agencies were called to a fire Wednesday evening at Meyer Inc., 532 Old Sawmill Road. According to a Dakota County Sheriff's deputy on the scene, crews were called to the fire around 6:40 p.m. at the business south of Highway 20 and west of Highway 77. The blaze could be seen for miles in the area.
Nothing Bundt Cakes to open in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY -- Nothing Bundt Cakes, a national chain of bakeries that sells, as its name suggests, Bundt cakes, is planning to open a Sioux City location. The bake shop will be at the Lakeport Commons shopping center, 5001 Sergeant Road, the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce wrote in a social media post. It was not immediately clear when the bakery plans to open.
PROGRESS: Hardline Coffee brewing in new space

SIOUX CITY -- Nisa Salmen couldn't be happier with where Hardline Coffee ended up. On Halloween, the coffeeshop opened in the Levich Building, 1004 Fourth St. It was the third time Hardline welcomed customers to a new downtown location since 2019. This, Salmen said, will be a long-term place. "It has been great," she said.
Rush Bowls, a health-food chain, opens Sioux City location

SIOUX CITY -- Rush Bowls, a national chain of health-food eateries, has opened a location in Lakeport Commons. The restaurant, 5001 Sergeant Road, had its grand opening this past weekend, Rush Bowls wrote in a post on its Facebook page. Rush Bowls' specialty is açaí and smoothie bowls, with a choice of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, plant milk and regular milk, protein, granola, juice, as well as other options. Sioux City's Rush Bowls is the only location to date in the tri-state area.

SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- It's all new. Nothing except steel structural beams remains of the old Marriott Event Center in South Sioux City. The venue, from roof to floor, was completely gutted last year in a deluxe overhaul that cost more than $5 million. A new state-of-the-art events center opened in early December.

His distillery will be a grand gathering place, teetotalers welcome. A restaurant. A wedding venue. NORTH SIOUX CITY -- A proposed residential and commercial development in North Sioux City is moving forward in spite of public discontent over the project and the form of public financing used to help defray its costs. The 86-acre development, called Union Crossing, has now survived two attempted petition drives that sought to put its $10 million Tax Increment Financing district before voters. Had the funding been voted down, officials say it would have sunk the development.

SIOUX CITY -- Sioux City officials have come out against an Iowa House study bill that would sunset a tax credit they say has helped goose local economic development over the past 19 years. The Targeted Jobs Withholding Tax Credit, administered by the Iowa Economic Development Authority, is one of multiple tax credit programs in the state that would be overhauled or eliminated under the proposal as written.

SIOUX CITY -- It began in a sideline in a residential kitchen. But it couldn't stay there forever. Jake and Lexa Hawkins began baking in their home during the pandemic and became a fixture at the Sioux City Farmers Market with their cookies, bars, brownies, rolls and cupcakes. In late 2022 they signed a lease for a commercial space at 515 Fourth St., the building where ArtSUX gallery is, and their Crumb. bakery took root there, gradually, as they built a commercial bakery.
