    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — As we head into severe weather season in Siouxland, it’s important to prepare before bad weather strikes. Of course, we’ve already had our yearly Severe Weather Awareness Week and had a refresher on the types of severe weather and how to stay safe during a tornado or flood. But it’s also important to have a plan in place ahead of time that can be implemented quickly when severe weather strikes and every second counts. So what, exactly does this look like?

On average, there are more flood-related fatalities than any other weather phenomena, with the exception of heat-related deaths. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), since 1940, flooding has resulted in 8,616 fatalities, or a 30-year average of 88 per year.

    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — It’s day 4 of Severe Weather Awareness Week here at KCAU 9 and today’s topic is hail and wind safety!Hailstones are formed when raindrops are carried up and down inside the storm cloud by thunderstorm updrafts. These raindrops collide into extremely cold areas of the atmosphere and then freeze. These hailstones grow larger afterward, by colliding with supercooled liquid droplets from the cloud.

    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — It’s Day 2 of Severe Weather Awareness week and today we focus on tornadoes and tornado safety!Each year in the United States, an average of 1,200 tornadoes strike, across the country. However, no where are tornadoes for frequent than Tornado Alley, which includes the Great Plains. Midwest, and the southern United States. In Iowa and Nebraska, a preliminary total of 131 tornadoes were reported in 2024, with 11 in South Dakota according to the Storm Prediction Center.
