A Houston Methodist doctor has been temporarily suspended after cocaine was allegedly found in his system back in October. Dr. Nathan Robert Starke is accused of performing multiple surgeries while under the influence between August and October of 2024. The suspension is effective immediately, according to the Texas Medical Board. A Texas Medical Board disciplinary panel issued the temporary suspension of Starke on Dec. 20.

Outgoing Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said her office will seek the death penalty against two men accused in the sexual assault and killing of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray. Capital murder charges were filed against 26-year-old Franklin Peña and 22-year-old Johan Martinez Rangel in June, days after the two men allegedly raped and strangled Nungaray, and left her body in a shallow creek near her home.

Houston could see hazy skies later this week as Saharan dust is expected to enter the region on Wednesday and through Friday. This could make breathing a little harder for people with respiratory issues as the dust is as a result of wind storms off the coast of Africa that send the dust across the Atlantic. Brian Kyle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says it’s best to listen to your doctor on those issues.

A man accused of killing a former Houston-area cheerleader in 1995 – and then subsequently fleeing to Mexico – was returned to Harris County this week to face a murder charge that dates back nearly three decades. Jose Luis Rios, 47, who was 19 when fellow 19-year-old Kristie Martin was fatally shot at a park in Channelview, was booked into the Harris County Jail on Wednesday, court records show.

A federal judge in Austin has rejected a challenge to Texas' ban of TikTok on government-issued devices such as cell phones, tablets and laptops. The policy applies to all state agencies, including public universities and colleges. The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University had sued Gov. Greg Abbott and state officials on behalf of the Coalition for Independent Technology Research, which includes academics and researchers. The lawsuit claimed the ban was unconstitutional.
