DOWNTOWN — A long-running federal anti-violence program is extending to Downtown’s trains and neighborhood for the first time as part of an effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to curb violence. Project Safe Neighborhoods, the U.S. Justice Department’s crime reduction program introduced in 2001, will now cover three Downtown financial zones and the entire rail system operated by the Chicago Transit Authority, U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros announced in a statement this week.

NAVY PIER — The Navy Pier Marina will open next month, allowing public boaters to finally dock at one of Chicago’s largest tourist attractions. The marina officially opens June 15 on the north side of the pier with the capability to dock boats up to 183 feet in length, according to a press release.

CHICAGO — The city is giving $20 million in grants to revitalize neighborhoods across Chicago, helping fund everything from an ice cream shop in Roseland to an expansion of Music Box Theatre in Lakeview, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced Wednesday. The grants will help pay for construction, rehabilitation of existing sites, site preparation expenses, architecture, engineering and other costs.

Located on the third floor of One Chicago, the 971-foot tower at 750 N. State St., the Alston blends Midwestern comfort with French-inspired cuisine. It’s led by chef Jenner Tomaska of the Michelin-starred Esme in Lincoln Park and the Fifty/50 Group’s Scott Weiner and Greg Mohr.

CHICAGO — City officials have revamped their community safety plan ahead of Memorial Day weekend with new youth events like late-night softball and basketball, more street ambassadors and expanded Park District programs to mark the unofficial start of summer. Launched in December 2023, the city’s “People’s Plan for Community Safety” aims to tackle the root causes of violence, using a people-first approach to offer programs, events and services in historically underserved neighborhoods.
