BOYCE — Monday night, White Post residents overwhelmingly told Clarke County planners they want their village to remain rural and peaceful, with little to no development. About 70 people took part in a public meeting at the Boyce Volunteer Fire Company's Social Hall to give the planners input into developing a Rural Lands Plan for the county.

BERRYVILLE — The Clarke County Conservation Easement Authority (CEA) wants you to take a hike. Literally. It has developed a flier titled “Take a Hike!” detailing a dozen trails — at locations both in and near the county — for people with varying levels of hiking skills. The trails range from short, flat ones that are easy to traverse to paths that are longer and more challenging. Accompanying the details is a map showing where the trails are located. Some of the trails are well-known.

BERRYVILLE — Berryville Town Council is looking to expand the town's boundaries in hopes of boosting the local tax base. At least one member of the Clarke County Board of Supervisors is concerned, based on a resolution the council adopted during its April 8 meeting. The resolution asks the Berryville Area Development Authority (BADA) to recommend amendments to the Berryville Area Plan (BAP).

BERRYVILLE — Clarke County officials have taken another step to try and get drivers to slow down along Va. 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) on Blue Ridge Mountain. Electronic speed monitoring signs have been installed beside the eastbound and westbound lanes near Valley Springs Lane. The so-called "radar signs" display the speeds of passing vehicles and flash when drivers exceed the 55 mph limit. They're mounted on poles below traditional speed limit signs.

BERRYVILLE — Groundwater in parts of Clarke County is at emergency levels amid the drought. No restrictions on water use have been imposed. But the Clarke County Board of Supervisors is encouraging people to conserve water. The U.S. Drought Monitor website on Wednesday showed most of the county is under a moderate drought, but areas along the West Virginia line are under severe drought.
