WINCHESTER — Up to 5 inches of rain fell across the Northern Shenandoah Valley Tuesday and early Wednesday, causing flooding and evacuations in many low-lying areas. BERRYVILLE — Law-enforcement officers may soon have a new option for giving drivers in Clarke County a break on minor first-time traffic offenses. WINCHESTER — Heavy rainfall today could cause flooding, despite the lingering drought. A flood watch issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday for Winchester as well as Frederick and Clarke counties. Moderate to heavy rain is expected through tonight, perhaps with a few thunderstorms. Up to 4 inches is possible, with higher amounts in spots where the rain is most intense, the NWS reported on its website.

BOYCE — Cock-a-doodle-doo. Anyone in Boyce who's been awakened — or otherwise annoyed — by a crowing rooster, don't worry. The town's new code compliance inspector, Todd Shiley, is looking into it. Shiley told the Town Council last Tuesday he spoke with a woman on Virginia Avenue who apparently has a rooster. She told him she would put a collar on the bird again, he said. "She tried to convince me it wasn't him," said Shiley.
