BERRYVILLE — At the request of teachers and other staff, prekindergarten classes will be split among Clarke County's two elementary schools. Administrators with Clarke County Public Schools (CCPS) made that decision upon consulting with the School Board during a special meeting Wednesday. Until now, all prekindergarten classes have been housed at D.G. Cooley Elementary School's Upper Campus on Westwood Road near Berryville.

BOYCE — Tuesday night, Boyce Town Council didn't choose the lowest bidder when approving the latest contract for residential garbage pickups. The council voted unanimously, following a motion by member Floyd Hudson, to award a three-year contract worth $99,900 to the current collector, Freedom Disposal Services LLC of Warren County. Under the contract, Boyce will pay Freedom $2,770 per month to collect trash at 300 homes. That equates to $9.25 per dwelling.

BOYCE — A lower real estate tax rate is reflected in a $201,900 annual budget adopted by Boyce Town Council on Tuesday. The spending plan, for the new fiscal year that will start July 1, reduces the rate from 2.5 cents to 1.74 cents per $100 of assessed value. That would normally mean the owners of a home assessed at $300,000 would see the yearly tax bill they get from the town drop from $75 to $52.20.

BERRYVILLE — Need to know which way to go? Town officials are looking to tell you. They're planning to have more than 20 new way-finding signs installed in Berryville by the end of the year. Berryville Town Council discussed the project during a work session Monday afternoon. Many of the signs will point the way to destinations such as the Barns of Rose Hill, Chet Hobert Park, the Clarke County Courthouse and the Ruritan Fairgrounds. Others will denote public parking areas.

BERRYVILLE — If it's seemed a little quieter in Berryville lately, there's a possible reason. The siren at the John H. Enders Fire Company & Rescue Squad currently is out of service. Officials don't yet know when it will be fixed. But they intend for it to blare again as soon as possible. It's long been a tradition by fire stations, particularly those in smaller communities, to use a "house siren" to alert volunteer personnel that they're needed to respond to an emergency.
