Denny Hamlin has now matched NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon for the best finish ever by a Cup driver making their 700th career start, placing third at Nashville. He is just the 22nd driver to ever reach that impressive milestone. It was not easy for Hamlin, and not just because of how difficult it was to pass at the concrete oval. The air hose going to his helmet was not functioning as it became disconnected, so it got extremely hot inside the cockpit of that No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

Carson Hocevar charged through the field at Nashville after starting 26th, reaching as high as second at the end before seeing the checkered flag. He didn't get there without some drama as Hocevar ended Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s day after some mid-race contact, drawing the ire of the fiery driver of the No. 47 Chevrolet. Nonetheless, Hocevar's march continued, climbing up to seventh by the end of the second stage.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. entered the Nashville Cup race 13th in the regular season standings and 10 points above the cut-line in the provisional playoff grid. Stenhouse hasn't been very fast this year, but he and his single-car team have been a model of consistency, making the most of what they have. With an average finish of 16.8, he was second of all drivers with laps completed. Unfortunately, he will lose a lot of those gains at Nashville.
