Incorrectly disposed of batteries caused seven fires in Gold Coast City Council garbage trucks in May. The Queensland Fire Department says battery fires are becoming more common due to rise in lithium-ion batteries. Gold Coast City Council has not ruled out fining people for incorrectly disposing of batteries in household waste. Flaming piles of garbage are being dumped on Gold Coast streets as the city's rubbish trucks catch fire because of batteries thrown in household waste.

Stephen Moriarty has been grazing cattle on his family acreage on the Gold Coast hinterland for most of his life. The 59-year-old decided to list his 121-hectare Sarabah property on Hipcamp, an online booking platform like Airbnb, for an extra source of income in 2019. Cr Moriarty, who was elected as a councillor for the Scenic Rim Regional Council (SRRC) last year, said he set up about eight campsites along a creek that ran through the property, charging travellers $25 a night.

Police say the poisoning of a horse racing track, which derailed Queensland's richest race carnival, was intentional. Gold Coast Acting Superintendent Jason Tuffley said investigations had ruled out accidental damage to the Gold Coast Turf Club earlier this month. The section of track leading into the home straight was discovered a day before the opening racing event of the week-long Magic Millions carnival.
