PEORIA, Illinois (WMBD) – Monday marks the small school baseball state quarterfinals. The Eureka Hornets one away from their goal of a trip to the 2A Final Four. They’ve been so very close to getting back to the state tournament since their last trip in 2013. But this may be the year they end the streak. The Hornets have already racked up 33 wins this season, but they know the biggest would be Monday night. One win away from state, it’s everything I wanted.

CHARLESTON, Illinois (WMBD) – It was a historic Saturday at the 130th IHSA Boys State Track and Field meet at Eastern Illinois. A Central Illinois athlete broke an all-time record. Bloomington Central Catholic’s Isaiah Whitaker set a new IHSA mark in the pole vault, leaping 17 feet, 6.5 inches. But it was also the Saint Junior’s third consecutive state championship in the 1A pole vault. Whitaker is a young man who’s thankful for those who have pushed him along the way. It means a lot.

WASHINGTON, Illinois (WMBD) – Baylee Parrott was born to be in a sports-loving family. Her mom Erin played softball; her father Brad, baseball. They would spend plenty of quality time in the batting cages. He was the best. We would sit in like the backyard for hours playing catch, and then he would take me up to At Bat, like throughout the night.

CHARLESTON, Illinois (WMBD) – Saturday saw not one but two Central Illinois girls track and field teams bring back state championships, but they weren’t the only ones bringing home hardware. Pontiac’s Maria Long took home gold, fittingly, in the 2A long jump by leaping 18 feet, 1.5 inches. Across the stadium, Stark County’s Chelsey Stotler won in the 1A shot put with a heave of 42 feet, 4.25 inches. Both are more appreciative of their wins after coming up short last year.
