If US tariffs on goods and services imported from Canada are rolled out broadly and maintained, immediate changes will be seen in our forecasts for retail sales, ecommerce sales, and cross-border buying. Still, the on-again-off-again trade decisions leave much uncertainty at this stage. In the medium term, we expect our ad spending figures to be lower, based on broader macroeconomic declines resulting from the tariffs.

Retail media will account for about 1 in 5 digital ad dollars this year. That’s about double the share it held in 2020. We expect it to surpass the one-quarter mark by 2028. Retail media ad spending growth in 2025 (19.7%) will be more than double the growth in digital ad spending (8.8%). Over the five-year span leading to 2028, we forecast a 134% gain in the channel overall. A rapid expansion in ad inventory is helping fuel growth.

Time spent with media across digital and traditional formats peaked last year. The 2024 GMI results showed a plateauing of consumption in the 11 media formats measured. Globally, time spent with media had slight declines across the board in 2024 (the only exception was mobile, which was flat). Most of the annual percentage declines in major categories were in the single digits, which doesn’t materially change the calculus for media mix planning and budget allocations.
