Authorities of the six of the eight universities banned by the Council of Legal Education (CLE) from admitting students through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have confirmed the sanction. In separate interviews with LEADERSHIP Weekend, top officials of the affected schools, said their institutions were penalised by CLE for starting the programmes before the regulator’s approval.

Federal High Court Càlabar, presided over by Justice Ifeoma Ojukwu, has ordered the Department of State Security, DSS, and the Cross River State Attorney General (AG) to produce Chief Maurice Omin Iso in court on Wednesday, 15 January 2025. Iso, a traditional ruler of Esuku-Otu, Ikot Ansa, Calabar, is said to have been detained by security operatives since December 21, 2024, on the directives of the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

About 100 illegal miners suspected to have migrated from the Sahel Savannah region of Africa have been arrested by the Cross River State government for allegedly invading Yakurr local government area communities. Findings by LEADERSHIP revealed that the illegal miners were apprehended during a sting operation led by the State’s Security Adviser, Major General Okoi Obono (rtd), on Saturday.

President Bola Tinubu has flagged off 23 kilometres of Ikom Etomi-Agbokim Waterfalls Road in Cross River State, which is worth billions of naira. At the flag-off ceremony, director Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC Dr Ajuwa Daniel urged the two contractors handling the road projects (Faith Plant Services and Rhema Vision) to execute the road project according to specifications.

Cross River State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Abubakar Ewa is dead. LEADERSHIP gathered that the 61-year-old passed away on Wednesday evening, January 8, 2025 at Arubah Specialist Hospital in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, after complaining of headache. A source from the state’s Ministry of Tourism Development who also confirmed Ewa’s demise under anonymity, stressed that Ewa complained of severe headache shortly after a meeting with the staff of the ministry.

Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh on Wednesday flagged off the 23kilometre Ikom Etomi-Agbokim Road in Ikom, Ikom local government area of Cross River State. The multi-billion Naira road project is the initiative of the Niger Delta Development Commission. The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL ) said it has secured a N6 billion research grant to promote academic excellence in the institution. The vice chancellor, Prof Florence Obi stated this yesterday in Càlabar while speaking during her 4th anniversary which took place at the University of Calabar campus. Obi stated that the grant is a challenge for academic staff to redouble their efforts in embarking in research programmes to enable them qualify to assess the fund.

Unless state governors review their current delay tactics in the payment of the N70,000 new minimum wage, industrial crisis may soon erupt at the second-tier of government. After the conclusion of negotiations with their workers and agreements signed, most of the governors are yet to pay the national wage which President Bola Tinubu signed into law on July 29, 2024. To the dismay of the workers, some of the governors, who even announced figures above the minimum wage, are yet to pay their workers.
