As novelty holidays go, National Donut Day seems pretty frivolous, although very tasty. The fried confections actually served a historical purpose, with Salvation Army volunteers boosting troop morale in World War I by serving the treats, thus becoming known as “Doughnut Dollies.” In 1938, the Salvation Army arranged for the first Friday of June to be recognized as National Donut Day.
