    Swarms of small, tan bugs have come out in hordes to the Quad-Cities this summer. The moth-like insects are caddisflies, and although the large numbers can be a nuisance, they are important for the environment and an indicator of good water quality, scientists say. Nahant Marsh conducts surveys on Pine Creek in Muscatine County and reported more caddisfly larva this spring than in recent years, said Brian Ritter, Nahant's executive director.

The “Rock the Block” event is part of Habitat’s Central City Repair Program which serves residents at or below 80% of the area median income. The program provides free exterior home repairs, landscaping and beautification projects for qualified residents.

    Grouping under umbrellas outside of Rock Island City Hall in Wednesday’s afternoon rain, roughly a dozen Quad-Cities residents protested a 10-acre development adjacent to the Milan Bottoms wetlands. Protesters gathered before a public hearing on expanding a tax increment financing district to include the project and other areas. The proposed development by A Hana Illowa LLC involves a cannabis dispensary and a gas station across from Bally's Quad Cities Casino and Hotel.

    About a dozen community leaders gathered at the Community Health Care office in Rock Island for a round table discussion with U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen, focused on proposed cuts to Medicaid. To start the meeting, Sorensen, a Democrat from Moline, said he is against the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ being proposed in Congress, saying it will directly affect the community at home. He voted against the bill, which passed the House last month in a 215-214 vote. The bill is now in the Senate.

    FlyHovercraft will host a summer hovercraft workshop program for middle schoolers beginning Friday, June 27. Hosted out of the FlyHovercraft's commercial space in LeClaire, the program is free for all attendees and will feature a ride on the Fly One hovercraft. Attendees will learn how the machines operate and get hands-on experience by constructing their own balloon-powered hovercraft.
