The St. Louis Board of Alderman is hoping to pass two tornado relief-related bills by week’s end, a four-day timeline that is many times faster than normal for legislation. “We really do have to hurry,” said Alderman Michael Browning, whose Ward 9 was spared the absolute worst damage but still includes many people who now need to relocate as their homes and apartments undergo repairs.

Concerned about the prevalence of lead in homes across the city, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen passed a bill in 2012 earmarking additional funding for it. By law, 60 percent of fees associated with inspecting housing units for occupancy were to go to the city’s Lead Remediation Fund. But the city appears to have quietly stopped the allocation, as city officials have conceded under questioning from both aldermen and SLM.

Cyclists are calling for safer biking and walking conditions on Gravois Avenue in St. Louis, which has seen two traffic-related deaths in the past two months. But even though they have the ear of the mayor, the path forward may be longer than they’d like. On April 1, a 27-year-old cyclist was struck and killed while riding in the bike lane in an alleged hit and run near Gravois’ intersection with Bamberger.

As St. Louis hits the one-week mark since a deadly tornado cut through a wide swath of the city, city officials say that they have fully pivoted from response to recovery. And for some affected residents, part of that recovery means finding a lawyer to answer questions.
