If a tree falls outside a forest, does anyone care if it’s found? A longstanding North City business is proving that the answer is decidedly yes, as it turns trees felled by last month’s tornado into furniture-ready wood. For the past 21 years, Lumber Logs has carved out a niche by taking damaged or fallen trees that no one else wants and helping transform them into materials that people do. They call themselves an “urban log recycler.” And lately, plenty of logs in St. Louis need recycling.

Vladimir Noskov—former DJ, gonzo journalist, and regular on The Howard Stern Show in its heyday— died May 6 in his apartment on Cherokee Street. He was 63 and had been suffering from lung cancer, which had left him thin and weak. “Towards the end, he needed around-the-clock care,” recalls his old friend Bill Streeter. “But he just refused any help.” That orneriness was quintessentially Noskov, who was known for years as “The Mad Russian” for his confrontational interviews with public figures.

But the North City-focused nonprofit in The Ville neighborhood hasn’t missed a beat since—they tarped the roof and got to work setting up resource hubs to provide for their neighbors.
