People from the D.C. area and across the world gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue on Sept. 28 for Fiesta D.C., an annual festival celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Initially conceived in the 1970s, Fiesta D.C. is now organized by the festival nonprofit and the mayor’s office. It celebrates the District’s Hispanic residents, who make up roughly 10% of its population.

Tensions surged on the fourth night of the Gaza solidarity encampment at George Washington University on Sunday night and into Monday morning. Barricades surrounding the encampment at University Yard (U-Yard) have been knocked down by protesters, and tents that had previously been set up on H Street were moved onto the green. Confrontations between police and protesters escalated from the relatively stable point they had been at for several days, and police presence began to increase on H Street.

Georgetown Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine (FSJP) held a vigil Tuesday at noon to mourn the Palestinian academics and university students killed by Israel in Gaza. This is the second vigil FSJP has held since the group’s founding in January. On Oct. 7, Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people.
