    In 1961 the Advertising Standards Authority set out a code to ‘ensure’ that all UK ads were ‘legal, decent, honest and truthful’. In 2012 they ran a 50-year commemoration of that code, suggesting that they believed their efforts had been successful. But had they? Forgetting ‘legal’ and ‘decent’ for a moment, how honest and truthful has advertising been? Let me give you a few examples to help you decide for yourself. When I was in college we were given a guest lecture by someone in poster advertising.

    From personal experience, I try to avoid lying as much as possible. Lying is only an option for me when I mess around with friends and family and to get out of uncomfortable situations, such as when I don’t want to hang out due to tiredness or myself not enjoying someone else’s company. FriendsContrary to what some of my peers would say about themselves, truth be told, they lie a lot. I am by no means an angel, but lying about unnecessary stuff and daily is not necessary.

    Advertising is a funny business. It’s an industry that’s reviled by many, for ‘forcing’ people to spend their money on things they don’t actually need. It’s an industry steeped in notoriety — the late nights, the abusive culture, the strange obsession behind awards that really don’t matter outside of our extremely insular world. But speak to people from advertising, and they talk about why what they do matters. It matters because we understand people. Because we are steeped in culture.
