The Seymour Thunder baseball team finished as the state runner-up in its first WIAA Division 2 state tournament appearance. Seymour lost 5-4 to New Berlin Eisenhower in the championship game after a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game was tied 4-4 after both teams had big four-run innings earlier in the contest. Seymour made several key defensive plays, including a barehanded catch by pitcher Carson Staffeldt and a tag out by third baseman Colten Nieland.

The Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic baseball team beat Kewaunee 3-2 in the WIAA Division 3 state championship game June 19 at Fox Cities Stadium, one year after finishing runner-up on the big stage. AdvertisementThe Lancers (23-7) moved into a third-place tie with Burlington Catholic Central and Nekoosa with five state championships since the tournament started in 1948, behind only the nine won by Sun Prairie and the seven by Appleton West.

UW-Green Bay redshirt freshman guard Bennett Basich has left the men's basketball program. Basich, a Wisconsin native, was recruited by former coach Sundance Wicks and stayed on after Wicks left and Doug Gottlieb was hired. Gottlieb expressed disappointment, stating he wanted Basich to stay but understands the player's desire for a larger role. UWGB now has two open scholarships and will explore options to fill those spots.

Seymour defeated La Crosse Aquinas 5-2 in the WIAA Division 2 state baseball semifinal. Junior pitcher Xavier Salzman led Seymour to victory, allowing two runs and striking out five in five innings. Seymour will play New Berlin Eisenhower in the state championship game. The Thunder had 11 hits and zero errors in the game. GRAND CHUTE – Seymour baseball coach Curt Jefson sensed his players were nervous entering the first state game in program history on June 18. It didn’t look like it.

Denmark softball team wins the Division 2 state championship, defeating Jefferson 4-1. Denmark upset higher-ranked teams throughout the playoffs, including #1 Fox Valley Lutheran and #2 Jefferson. Strong pitching performances by Maggie Frank and Shaelyn Kraschnewski led Denmark to victory. Denmark overcame a late rally by Jefferson in the sixth inning, securing the win with a wild pitch double play. Despite graduating six seniors, Denmark is poised for continued success with key players returning.
