SPOKANE, Wash. — A woman accused of setting fire to trees and buildings in a north Spokane neighborhood will not face an arson charge, at least for now. Spokane County court commissioner Jerry Scharosch said police investigation may later lead to a higher felony charge, but for now, Jessie Green will only face first-degree reckless burning, a Class C felony.

The indictment means the grand jury believes prosecutors have enough evidence to convict Diaz on the federal charge. A U.S. District Court judge entered a not guilty plea on Diaz's behalf, and the case will go to trial. According to court documents, Diaz allegedly elbowed Agent Walter Sketch in the eye during a struggle caught on Diaz's home security camera. “There’s times he’s heartbroken and feels hopeless because sometimes it feels hopeless," said Kendall Diaz, Martin Diaz's wife.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash — With the Real ID deadline going into effect Wednesday, wait times at the Spokane Valley Driver Licensing Office (DOL) were over three hours long on Tuesday afternoon. “When I first got up there, they told me three hours, so this is pretty good compared to that!” said Brooklyn Hillman, a high school senior skipping class to wait in line for a Real ID. She says she has a trip to Hawaii scheduled for Wednesday and just hopes to make it somehow.

VATICAN CITY, — For the first time in 12 years, the College of Cardinals will convene in Vatican City to elect a new pope, and one participant in the conclave has ties to Spokane. Cardinal Blase Cupich, a former bishop of the Diocese of Spokane, will join the other cardinals to vote for the successor to Pope Francis. The conclave process will begin on Wednesday, May 7.
