Some Chicago Public Schools students are collaborating with female artists in South Africa on a project with a global scale. Second, third, and fifth graders at Hamilton Elementary School, at 1650 W. Cornelia Ave. in West Lakeview, are excited to build connections with women 8,000 miles away. "It's fun to make, because it represents the people of Africa," said Frankie Adkison, 8, a second grader at the school.

The City of Chicago's safety plan was put to the test this Memorial Day, and it appeared to be passing late in the day — as the Police Department prepared for large crowds. Fewer than two dozen people were shot this weekend, about half the number from last year. Violent crimes are down as a whole compared to last year's Memorial Day weekend. The cooler weather could have something to do with it, but one organization made sure young men stayed occupied and out of trouble.

Experts have issued a frightening warning for anyone planning to grill outside this summer. A propane tank like the one often used for grills is blamed for an incredible explosion this weekend in the west Chicago suburb of Addison, Illinois. Neighbors said they are happy the explosion in the 300 block of North Wood Dale Road in Addison Saturday morning didn't turn out worse. A Penske box truck had exploded, leaving a trail of debris one to two blocks long — including clothing and damaged furniture.
