In spite of their realtor’s advice, Rachelle Westman and her husband, Pete, decided to buy their first home in Victoria’s Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood. That was more than 30 years ago, and even then the area was plagued with problems related to drugs, crime, and homelessness. Much later, during COVID, with graffiti everywhere and complaints from residents seemingly constant, Rachelle decided to do something about it.

It’s perhaps no surprise that Debra Rogers became a firefighter. Members of her family go back four generations in the fire service. It wasn’t easy and it isn’t easy being the only female career fighter in the Campbell River department, so Debra has made it her mission to increase the number of women doing the work. She has launched the Island Ignite Mentorship Society whose main job is to hold firefighting camps for young women.
