In spite of their realtor’s advice, Rachelle Westman and her husband, Pete, decided to buy their first home in Victoria’s Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood. That was more than 30 years ago, and even then the area was plagued with problems related to drugs, crime, and homelessness. Much later, during COVID, with graffiti everywhere and complaints from residents seemingly constant, Rachelle decided to do something about it.

Girls' firefighting camp teaches more than just how to put out fires

It’s perhaps no surprise that Debra Rogers became a firefighter. Members of her family go back four generations in the fire service. It wasn’t easy and it isn’t easy being the only female career fighter in the Campbell River department, so Debra has made it her mission to increase the number of women doing the work. She has launched the Island Ignite Mentorship Society whose main job is to hold firefighting camps for young women.

With the local Lions Club, of which she’s been a member for 75 years, she regularly pushed a wheelbarrow from Fanny Bay to Courtenay raising money. Even today, at her home in Union Bay, where she’s spent all of her 94 years, Ann Pratt has boxes full of hundreds of dolls that she has restored and re-purposed, waiting to be donated to children in need.

Sarah Grey, otherwise known as DC’s Stargirl, is also a former student, as are countless others who have â€˜made it.â€™ Kaese came to Nanaimo from the U.K. after falling for a dashing young hockey player, Trent Kaese. She went on to become a champion of women in film and of Vancouver Island talent.
