AbstractThere is substantial cognitive heterogeneity among patients with schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorders (BD). More knowledge about the magnitude and clinical correlates of performance variability could improve our understanding of cognitive impairments. Using double generalized linear models (DGLMs) we investigated cognitive mean and variability differences between patients with SZ (n = 905) and BD spectrum disorders (n = 522), and healthy controls (HC, n = 1170) on twenty-two variables.

Patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls were recruited through the Thematically Organised Psychosis (TOP) study cohort at the Norwegian Centre for Mental Disorders Research (NORMENT, Oslo, Norway; (https://www.med.uio.no/norment/english). Diagnoses were obtained by trained clinical psychologists or physicians using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I) [15] with an 82% diagnostic reliability for DSM-IV diagnostic categories [16].
