Five coaches of University of Wisconsin winter sports had routine one-year contract extensions approved by the Athletic Board on Wednesday. The five-year contracts for Greg Gard (men's basketball), Mike Hastings (men's hockey), Mark Johnson (women's hockey), Chris Bono (wrestling) and Yuri Suguiyama (men's and women's swimming and diving) now run through the 2029-30 season.

The optics of a coach receiving a contract extension months after completing a losing season usually aren’t great. At the University of Wisconsin, however, it’s part of the standard procedure for head coaches, no matter whether their season was championship caliber, bottom of the barrel or somewhere in between. The Athletic Board on Feb. 19 approved the recommendation of athletics administrators to give Badgers football coach Luke Fickell a routine, one-year extension.
