KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A dog that captured the hearts of East Tennesseans has found a home after a suspected "deliberate act of cruelty" took the life of her sister. Officers from Young-Williams Animal Center responded around 7 a.m. Monday at NHC Healthcare, where they discovered a dead dog and a second female dog that was alive and didn't appear to be hurt. A bag similar to the one found on the dead dog was also found, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

LOUDON COUNTY, Tenn. — The Knox County Regional Forensic Center released the autopsies of two Chattanooga teens who died in April after they jumped from an interstate bridge during a multi-county chase and plunged into the river below in Loudon County. The autopsy reports identified the two teens as 18-year-old Marico Johnson and 16-year-old Mykel Haddox.

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. — A former Madisonville police officer is facing several charges after an investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller's Office. Investigators said former officer Bobby Woods stole more than $3,000 from Madisonville by using his city-issued fuel card for personal fuel purchases on 84 different occasions between February 2022 and December 2023.

CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. — A Claiborne County man pleaded guilty in court to felony first-degree murder in the death of his young son in 2022. Aaron Smith pleaded guilty to murder, especially aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault in court, according to Eighth Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler's office. Judge Zachary Walden presided over the plea hearing and sentenced him to life in prison plus six consecutive years.

COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. — A crash brought Interstate 40 to a halt on Friday afternoon near the Tennessee-North Carolina state line. The crash happened around 1 p.m. near Hartford, Tennessee in the single-lane construction zone on I-40 East, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Traffic could be seen backed up for several miles to Bluffton on TDOT's cameras. Crews had to close both sides of the interstate for emergency vehicles.
