The Down East Wood Ducks played their final game in Kinston in Sept. 8 but there will be more baseball to follow after an announcement from the city on Tuesday. City of Kinston and Lenoir County officials, along with members of an independent baseball league, announced Kinston will be the new home of the Down East Bird Dogs. As part of the Frontier League, a partner of Major League Baseball, the Bird Dogs will begin playing baseball in Kinston starting in 2025.

A structure fire that happened around lunch time in James City on Friday started after a vehicle that was located inside the building caught on fire. The building, located at 542 W. Grantham Road, houses a vehicle repair shop called Full Speed Inc. The owner of the building is Greg Muse, according to Craven County GIS while the owner of the repair shop is Kenny Hardison, according to the NC Secretary of State website.

The North Carolina Press Association held its 2024 Editorial and Advertising contest, and staff with the New Bern Sun Journal took home multiple state-wide awards. Sun Journal Editor Trevor Dunnell, Sports Writer Wayne Dzubak, and Beat Writer Zaneta Will shined in multiple categories. In advertising, Cassie Groff won 2nd place in the Service Ad category. Between 2023 and 2024, the city of Havelock remained in the public eye, with multiple sewage spills occurring over several months.
New Bern alderman officially appointed by governor as new state senator for Craven, Lenoir, Beaufort

In December, NC State Senator Jim Perry announced he would not seek re-election to represent Craven, Lenoir, and Beaufort counties in the North Carolina General Assembly. Last month, Perry announced he was resigning after the spring session, leaving the seat open. On July 23, the 2nd Senatorial District Committee, made up of Craven, Beaufort, and Lenoir counties, nominated New Bern Ward 6 Alderman Bob Brinson to fill the unexpired term from Perry’s departure.
