Kinston announces baseball is here to stay with new independent league team

The Down East Wood Ducks played their final game in Kinston in Sept. 8 but there will be more baseball to follow after an announcement from the city on Tuesday. City of Kinston and Lenoir County officials, along with members of an independent baseball league, announced Kinston will be the new home of the Down East Bird Dogs. As part of the Frontier League, a partner of Major League Baseball, the Bird Dogs will begin playing baseball in Kinston starting in 2025.
The Daily News wins state-wide awards in nine different categories

The North Carolina Press Association held its 2024 Editorial and Advertising contest earlier this year, and the Jacksonville Daily News took home nine awards in nine separate categories. General News Reporter Morgan Starling won seven awards, while Sports Editor Chris Miller won two. Here is a breakdown of the awards.
Structure fire in James City caused by car catching on fire inside building

A structure fire that happened around lunch time in James City on Friday started after a vehicle that was located inside the building caught on fire. The building, located at 542 W. Grantham Road, houses a vehicle repair shop called Full Speed Inc. The owner of the building is Greg Muse, according to Craven County GIS while the owner of the repair shop is Kenny Hardison, according to the NC Secretary of State website.

The North Carolina Press Association held its 2024 Editorial and Advertising contest, and staff with the New Bern Sun Journal took home multiple state-wide awards. Sun Journal Editor Trevor Dunnell, Sports Writer Wayne Dzubak, and Beat Writer Zaneta Will shined in multiple categories. In advertising, Cassie Groff won 2nd place in the Service Ad category. Between 2023 and 2024, the city of Havelock remained in the public eye, with multiple sewage spills occurring over several months.
New Bern alderman officially appointed by governor as new state senator for Craven, Lenoir, Beaufort

In December, NC State Senator Jim Perry announced he would not seek re-election to represent Craven, Lenoir, and Beaufort counties in the North Carolina General Assembly. Last month, Perry announced he was resigning after the spring session, leaving the seat open. On July 23, the 2nd Senatorial District Committee, made up of Craven, Beaufort, and Lenoir counties, nominated New Bern Ward 6 Alderman Bob Brinson to fill the unexpired term from Perry’s departure.

South Lenoir looking for new head football coach

After three seasons at the helm, South Lenoir head football coach Will Harrell has left the program and has taken an assistant position with a state powerhouse. Harrell, who took over the program ahead of the 2021 season, has left to join Clinton High School. The Dark Horses went 15-1 in 2023, making the 2A state championship game, before falling 28-18 to Reidsville. Harrell took over the Blue Devils' program ahead of the 2021 season.
Senator Jim Perry announces resignation

In December, after announcing a re-election campaign, State Senator Jim Perry decided to not seek a fourth term. On Tuesday, Perry announced his resignation. Effective Tuesday, Perry has resigned from his position as a state senator, representing Lenoir, Craven and Beaufort counties. "It has been a great honor to be a member of the North Carolina Senate and to serve the people of the East," Perry said in a Facebook post Tuesday morning.
Did Craven County's school board follow law and policy when extending superintendent's contract?

Debates have risen since the Craven County Board of Education voted to extend Superintendent Wendy Miller's contract. Some community members have alleged the school board did not follow state law or local policy during the process. On June 18, after a closed meeting, the school board voted 4-3 to extend Miller’s contract by two years. Miller’s contract was set to expire in June 2025 and is now extended to June 2027.
Craven County commissioners to hold public hearing regarding commercial outdoor shooting range

In early June, a local resident took concerns he had to the Craven County Board of Commissioners, regarding an outdoor shooting range that local business owner Jonathan Bennett plans to open on Saints Delight Church Road. On July 1, the board will hold a public hearing of adopting a commercial outdoor shooting range ordinance.
