Clad in their jerseys, the student-athletes filed into the Highlands High School athletic center to take part in a special drill. This one wasn't to help them improve on the field. It was to show some love for head baseball coach and special education teacher Eugene Briseño. In September 2024, doctors told Briseño they'd detected a spot on his gall bladder. The diagnosis was cancer. In February, he had surgery and began the chemotherapy treatments that caused his loss of hair.
