In 1881, 17-year-old Albert Friedrich opened a barroom that accepted antlers and horns as payment for drinks. The tavern evolved, changed locations and eventually became the Buckhorn Museum and Saloon at 318 E. Houston St. in downtown San Antonio. In 1946, the Art Moderne building at 2603 Broadway St., was built as the home of Tai Shan Restaurant, owned by Ted and Rose Wu, who were prominent entrepreneurs in San Antonio.
