The United States military branches were dealing with dismantling regulations that segregated non-whites from whites. That ripple was felt at Donaldson Air Force Base in South Carolina. In July 1953, Edward D. Young Jr. was among about 15 men who were candidates to become second lieutenants in the Air Force. Five of the candidates, including Young, were Black.
