In 1881, 17-year-old Albert Friedrich opened a barroom that accepted antlers and horns as payment for drinks. The tavern evolved, changed locations and eventually became the Buckhorn Museum and Saloon at 318 E. Houston St. in downtown San Antonio. In 1946, the Art Moderne building at 2603 Broadway St., was built as the home of Tai Shan Restaurant, owned by Ted and Rose Wu, who were prominent entrepreneurs in San Antonio.

The San Antonio chapter of Tuskegee Airmen is proposing the city of San Antonio rename a segment of an East Side street Tuskegee Airmen Way, in honor of America's first Black military pilots. Chapter president Rick Sinkfield said the designated stretch of road is currently part of Iowa Street. It's in historical Denver Heights, where several Tuskegee Airmen grew up. The stretch of road that could be renamed runs from Cherry Street to New Braunfels Avenue.

In the early 1970s, there weren't many Black doctors practicing in San Antonio. Dr. James L. Hadnott began organizing gatherings at his home for African American physicians to get to know and support one another. It was one of many ways Hadnott was a "visionary," said Dr. George D. Hilliard, 80, who shared a close friendship with Hadnott for more than 50 years.

In early November, the brown and tan little dog with a black streak on her back was dodging traffic on West side streets. Residents had called Animal Care Services, concerned about the lean dog - a beagle mix - and her two companions, Fred the Terrier and a German shepherd with no name. Day and night, the trio darted down Ross Avenue, stopping cars near South Zarzamora Street, running past car garages, a mobile home park and a motel named after matadors.

For most of her life, the 84-year-old artist has inhabited the adventurous spirit of the lead character in her favorite book - "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," by Lewis Carroll. So it isn't surprising to step into her San Antonio apartment and feel as if you've fallen head-over-heels into the bizarre world of Carroll's children's book.
