In the 1950s, the Genesee Brewery came up with a catchy slogan trumpeting Genny Cream Ale and beer as brewed with pure Hemlock Lake water. The beer ads did not lie. Strategically unstated was that the brewery’s water comes from Rochester’s municipal water system. The water source for the city’s more than 200,000 residents is indeed Hemlock Lake, a seven-mile-long Finger Lake located mostly in Livingston County.

Finding beds for patients who need skilled nursing care has long been a problem for Rochester hospitals. Since COVID, that problem has reached crisis proportions. Known in hospital jargon as ALC patients, short for alternative level of care, the average number of such patients occupying beds at Strong Memorial Hospital, the region’s largest acute-care facility, has soared. It has increased from 11 at the end of Strong’s fiscal year in 2018 to 94 as of July 3, 2024.

An appeals court has reversed a lower-court ruling that sent former Democrat and Chronicle newspaper carriers’ Child Victims Act complaints to the Workers Compensation Board. The court ruled that the former carriers are entitled to their long-sought day in court to address allegations of sexual abuse by a supervisor. Eight ex-carriers first filed CVA claims against the D&C and Gannett Corp. in 2019, shortly after the law took effect.
